Nutanix Guest Tools IP-Less Communication

Nutanix just released (as of 7 October 2024) version 6.10 of their AOS software. In the release notes there is a point named: IP-Less Communication Between NGT and CVM. Let dig into this.

So Nutanix Guest Tools (NGT) are used for the following:

If you need one of those features you need to install the NGT. But this mean you need to open TCP poort 2074 between your VM and the CVM’s. You can check the current setup by running: ncli ngt list vm-name=<vm-name>

This will output something like this (when it is working):

And this when firewall ports are not open 😉

Now with AOS 6.10 we don’t need TCP 2074 anymore to be open. Lets test this the easy way with a VM without an Interface at all 😉

As you can see in the screenshot the VM doesn’t have any Network Interfaces and Windows doesn’t has an IP-Address and the communication link is active. Pretty cool.
